Rug Modification
Rug Resizing & Reshaping in Atlanta
Too big for the room? We'll cut it down. In our own Chamblee workshop, since 1972.
Most people don't know a rug can be resized. It can. If a rug is too long for your hallway, too wide for your dining room, or has one damaged end you'd rather be rid of, we can cut it, rebind the edges, and hand it back looking like it was made that way. We've been doing this in-house for over fifty years — on our rugs and on yours.
What We Can Do
How We Do It
Inspection
We check weave density, knot structure, and the foundation before we plan a single cut.
Pattern mapping
We plan the cut so medallions and borders stay balanced — the goal is that it never looks trimmed.
Precision cutting
Measured twice, cut once.
Edge finishing
Hand or machine binding, or hand serging, in a color you pick.
Final inspection and delivery
Free in metro Atlanta.
One thing we'll always tell you: cutting a genuine antique permanently reduces what it's worth. On most rugs that doesn't matter and the result is beautiful. On a rare one, we'll say so before we touch it. We'd rather turn down the job than ruin a good rug.
Common Reasons People Resize a Rug
Moved to a new house
A rug that fit perfectly in the old living room is two feet too long in the new one. Rather than buying a new rug, we cut it to fit.
Rug blocks a door swing
A thick rug that catches on a door every time it opens is a daily frustration. We trim the edge so the door clears cleanly.
Hallway is shorter than the runner
Runners are sold in standard lengths. If yours is too long for your hall, we cut it to length and rebind the end.
One end is damaged
If one end of a rug has significant damage — a bad stain, moth damage, a torn edge — removing that section and rebinding is often cleaner and less expensive than repairing it.
Want a runner from a room-size rug
A 9×12 rug can become two 3×12 runners, or a 4×12 runner with offcuts. We cut, rebind, and hand back finished pieces.
Need to fit around a hearth
Fireplaces and hearths create irregular room shapes. We cut rugs to fit around them so the rug lies flat and looks intentional.
