What your rug is worth
A handmade wool or silk rug is one of the few things in a house that can be restored rather than replaced. Cleaning a standard 8×10 hand-knotted wool rug starts at about $520. Replacing that same rug — a comparable handmade piece of similar size and quality — generally runs $1,500 to $10,000 or more depending on origin, knot density, and materials.
Regular professional cleaning is what keeps a rug in the first category instead of the second. Dry soil trapped in the foundation acts like sandpaper against the fibers every time someone walks across it, and that wear is not reversible. A rug cleaned every one to three years can last generations. One that is never cleaned usually doesn't.
