The foundation of a hand-knotted rug is the grid of warp and weft threads that the pile knots are tied around. Warp threads run the length of the rug; weft threads run across it, locking the knots in place after each row. When foundation threads break or rot — from water damage, heavy use, or age — the rug loses structural integrity. Pile knots loosen and fall out, and the rug can split along the damaged area.
Foundation repair means replacing the damaged warp or weft threads with new ones matched to the original in fiber and weight, then re-securing the pile knots in the repaired area. It's painstaking work — each thread has to be woven back through the existing structure without disturbing the surrounding pile — but it restores the rug's structural integrity and stops the damage from spreading.
Foundation damage is often invisible from the front of the rug. If you notice areas where the pile feels loose, where the rug is buckling or rippling in a way that won't flatten, or where you can see light through the back, those are signs of foundation damage. Bring it in and we'll assess it.
Backing Repair
Some rugs — particularly machine-made rugs and flatweaves — have a secondary backing applied to the underside to add stability and protect the foundation. This backing can crack, peel, or deteriorate over time, especially on older rugs or rugs that have been stored in damp conditions. A damaged backing makes the rug less stable underfoot and can cause the pile to loosen.
We repair or replace deteriorated backing using materials matched to the original in weight and texture. On rugs where the original backing has become brittle and is actively shedding, we remove it entirely and apply a new backing that stabilizes the rug without adding unnecessary stiffness.
Backing repair is often done in conjunction with other work — cleaning, foundation repair, or edge rebinding — since the rug is already in the workshop. If you're having other work done, ask us to assess the backing at the same time.
